Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve overall health. The Exercises are performed on a mat and on specially designed spring-loaded equipment. The Pilates system includes exercises for every part of the body and applications for every kind of activity. Athletes practice pilates to enhance their sports skills, fitness enthusiasts to help them do the things they love to do better and the injured to rehabilitate chronic back pain, muscle degeneration, muscle strain or joint pain. Created in the early part of the 20th century, Pilates was so far ahead of it’s time that it did not begin to achieve popular recognition until the first few years of the 21st century. Over 10 million people are now students of Pilates in the United States and the numbers are growing every year
Pilates focuses on engaging the mind with the body to create exercises that involve the whole body. Every exercise is performed with attention to breath, proper form and efficient movement patterns. Under the direction and coaching of a properly trained and certified teacher, the exercises are safe, low impact and appropriate for anyone from 10 to 100. Pilates focuses on learning to move better so the benefits are felt in everyday life. Pilates strengthens the core, improves flexibility and balance, increases coordination and decreases stress.
Whether you decide to work one-on-one in a rehabilitative or sports conditioning setting or prefer to work in a small group fitness class, our goal at the Balanced Body Studio and Wellness Center remains the same - optimal strength, flexibility and endurance, without risk of injury or building bulk muscle. With our focus on stability of the core, including pelvic and shoulder stabilization, neutral alignment and focused breathing patterns, we will help you restore the natural curves of your spine, relieve tension and build your self confidence...the end result being a balanced and aligned body of improved appearance that feels energized and enjoys the Freedom of Movement.
